On “Portrait” we will meet Arabian tunes as well as South American rhythms and the Jazz influences of Bill Evans. And what‘s more, Fowler proves to be a master of the “lean” but hence even more effective arrangement. Fowler not only surprises by using exotic instruments like the mandocello or charango, but he also manages to summon an intense, chamber music like atmosphere – take the quartet of guitar, viola da gamba, violin and accordion in track 12 as an example of what makes it such a fascinating experience to listen to “Portrait”.
